To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Exploring Patterns, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs. GoalCreate and explore patterns that change in more than one way. Builds UponStudent Book pages 6-7
Instructions for UsePattern Quest is a program where the computer picks secret patterns using four of six given shapes. Students have eight tries to guess the pattern. Clues are given after each try. To use Pattern Quest, click the arrow at the lower right-hand side of the screen to read the instructions. For the easy game, click on the pattern pieces and they will appear on the bottom row of the grid. After four shapes have been chosen, the results will show whether the pattern piece is in the right location, and whether it is the correct shape. Continue to select the next four shapes using the clues provided after the first row selections. Students are given eight chances to find the secret pattern using the clues given. After students have mastered this mode, continue on to the hard mode.
Cyber Pattern Player prompts students to pick a sound pattern they can hear and see. To use Cyber Pattern Player, click on the yellow squares to hear the pattern. Click the 'Next' button to hear and see patterns that are more complicated. Each horizontal row is a different instrument. Click on any of the squares to turn a sound on, click on the square again and the sound turns off. Click on the 'Funky Pattern' buttons to hear pre-made patterns. The 'More Sounds' button loads new sounds into the player. Click the 'Erase All' button to clear all patterns. Have students create new patterns. Builds problems solving skills. Some students would benefit from working with a partner. |
