Morgan’s Leadership:
Growing up in a community
predominantly comprised of Indigenous peoples, Morgan had the opportunity to develop
an
in-depth
understanding of various Indigenous groups. She was deeply engaged in teaching and
learning
from
others not only in extra-curricular activities in school, but in sharing her passion
for
dance.
Morgan further supported youth in by mentoring students academically providing
resources and
mentorship to succeed. Through her leadership, Morgan has formed lasting friendships
and
continues to connect with students from her hometown today.
The Impact:
This scholarship alleviated a financial burden for Morgan allowing her to focus
studies and share her story through the art of dance. She notes, “Beyond the
financial
impact of
this scholarship, Nelson is demonstrating support to Indigenous students to pursue
their
passions and academic goals. I am so grateful for the support.”
In the future,
Morgan is
planning to take her learnings from York University back to Newfoundland and
Labrador to
teach
junior and intermediate students dance and math. Simultaneously, to combine her
passions,
Morgan
would like to open her own dance studio to continue sharing her love for the sport
and
mentoring
others.
We asked Morgan what is one piece of advice she would give to Indigenous
high
school
students and she shared, “Always dream big and never allow limitations to define
your
potential."
